De-Clutter Your Home in 5 Easy Steps

Anytime is a great time to minimize your belongings, especially, however, if you’re selling or moving to a smaller place in the near future. Following are a few steps to ensure you get the most out of your “stuff.”

Determine the value of your items.  Consider hiring an appraiser to determine the worth of your valuables.   $125-$150 an hour is the typical charge for an appraiser to ‘walk-through’ your home and help you evaluate which items to keep, sell or toss.

Be organized for the appraiser. Collect receipts and documentation for unusual items. Open boxes and make sure rooms are well-lit.  You’ll save time and money.

Decide on your keepers.   See which items you simply can’t live without and which ones you’d like to pass on to your family and friends.

Have a written plan for your family. Once you decide to give your antique vase to your daughter, don’t just tell her, write it down.  Have an open discussion with all family members and put the decision in writing. This helps prevent arguments and may keep those gifts in the family in the event of a divorce.

Find a good home for your belongings.  Consider donating.  It can be easier to let go of things if you know they’re serving a good purpose.  Give to your local shelter or an organization you care about.  Keep records of the current value of items given for tax purposes.
